This is about as rare as it gets when it comes to the famous Italian leather designer company il Bisonte. For those that know and collect the brand, this is quite possibly the most difficult to find, and most significant il Bisonte piece you'll likely come across in your search for examples of the brand's best. This is a large, and quite heavy 100% plush leather genuine'90s il Bisonte script holder. Though intended to house a manuscript, this piece makes a lovely general use as a 3 prong binder.
Entirely made by hand, I was gifted this script holder from a friend who worked in the film business in the mid'90s. For years I had admired his beautiful Bisonte piece... The thickness of the leather build, the finite and meticulous seams that held the piece together, the stunning high detail etchings bearing the leaping Bisonte bull throughout. Despite his affection for the Bisonte rarity, he passed it along to myself. Now, in my older years, I know the time has come for this stunning Bisonte script holder to move on to the next phase in its life.
Though I vowed I would never part with this piece, holding on to this script holder just to say I own it suddenly seems wrong... Like the Ferrari owner who keeps his stunning car cooped up in a garage year, after year, after year. This Bisonte script holder is something to behold in many regards, yet - its design itself makes the piece a "stand alone" Bisonte product. You simply cannot find Bisonte works of this size, and caliber on the market. Actually, you cannot find an Il Bisonte all leather - soft leather - large binder anywhere! Look, but you will not find. Run a search for "il Bisonte binder, " I promise you you'll end up right back here! Being an il Bisonte collector, this piece's rarity has made it somewhat of a coveted item of mine. However, there is a lot more to this Bisonte work besides its very hard to find status. This Il Bisonte binder is composed of quite possibly the softest, most plush and THICK leather I've seen in my many, many years. This is no lightweight ensemble.... They simply do not MAKE leather goods of this quality, and substance anymore. Thick, heavy, and ludicrously malleable.
To myself this binder has always had a "silk-like" feel.. Beyond a doubt, this is a testament to the brand. Not only is the leather beautifully intact and amazingly conditioned all these years later - it has also taken on an almost otherworldly feel.I never knew leather could be THIS soft... These days, leather is tough, course, "board-like" in composition... This binder is a throw back to the way leather used to be done... I've come to realize that out of the many things Italians do well, they perhaps are most skilled, most honed, when it comes to creating seemingly implausible works of art out of a purely leather base. This binder has a cream tan hue, vibrant and wonderfully solid/deep.
At the front of the binder/script holder dead center is a beautifully hand etched il Bisonte brand name, along with the world famous "Leaping Bison" logo. Let the binder flip open (a smooth as butter movement given the malleability of the leather, no resistance) and you'll find the 3 prong insert. This 3 prong insert is a deep gold, high polish brass. The 3 prong insert doesn't come out well in the photos given it is SO reflective. When you see the 3 prong insert in person, it will appear a high polished deep yellow gold in hue. The 3 prong insert functions perfectly. At the interior, you will also find 2 pockets.
These pockets are pull away, and BOTH are lined in a light cream tan canvas material. The canvas lining is absolutely mint...
No flaws of note whatsoever. At the inside right bottom corner, there is an authenticity stamp - printed directly into the leather that reads: Designed by W. Di Filippo: Genuine leather made in Italy. To the left of this stamped statement, you have yet again the leaping bison logo and brand name.
The back of this bander is a stunning display of uninterrupted il Bisonte Italian leather.. This piece is in absolutely beautiful condition. There are no cuts, tears, noticeable scrapes, etc. The leather is incredibly plush and soft - truly feels like silk in the hand.
Really the only sign of wear (if you would call it that) on this piece comes in the form of leather discoloration. When I first acquired this Il Bisonte piece, I was entirely taken by the "distressed" looking leather - so fitting was the look that I thought the "discoloration" was part of the design.. An intentional choice in design aesthetic.Upon bringing it home, and after researching similar pieces, it seems that this discoloration in the leather was not intentional - and rather the result of wear over time. It is my opinion that this "discoloration" of the leather is what makes this piece so entirely unique. I personally LOVE the look..
It just plays in perfectly given this is a vintage, old school Il Bisonte'90s piece. And so unlike anything I have come across in modern times. Overall, I can't stress enough the beauty of this piece...
The photos do not do it justice - and - of course - I can't possibly describe through written word alone how this leather Bisonte rarity FEELS. This will make any Bisonte collector's year... The perfect piece to add to your growing vintage Bisonte collection! I will get back to you promptly.
